Tailor-Made ‘Vent’

After an exhausting day at work while returning home, cringed, irritated and exasperated with the job, the pressure, the politics at work and the constant changes in the targets, I was trying to gasp some fresh air and vent out all the frustration. Finding peace, was on the top of my list that evening. What better place than my own abode, I thought. So looking for the bus, I waited at the bus stop.

Exactly behind the bus stop was a ladies tailoring shop. Being a huge fan of curious case of Benjamin Button, curiosity was something which always kept me alive. 😀 Moreover, since school, I was taught that it was the cat who got killed by curiosity and not men. 😀 So I knew I was off the death list at least that evening. Also, had to kill time till the bus didn’t turn up.

With clothes spread across the shop, it was already looking like a massacre scene from a battlefield movie. In no time the commander in chief; the tailor, came out of a bunker; a tiny room behind the closet and got busy with his work. He took charge of his artillery; the scissors, the measuring tape, the drawing pencil and resumed his work.

Soon one of the infiltrators; his customer, came in charging. She was carrying huge bags of ammunition; clothes. Keeping one bag with herself, the rest were handed over to him. With stern voice and lot of animated discussion the battle seemed to be going strong. The commander in chief was successful in showing his prowess. Just as he thought he convinced his customer and won the first installment of the war, the conditions changed dramatically when he handed over a newly stitched piece of garment to her.

Looking at the new creation, instead of being happy and appreciating his work, she got furious. It soon appeared that the commander in chief was left without any support and the “one step progress” made by him turned out to be, “retreat ten steps back” in the battle. He was left gasping for breath. He wasn’t even provided with any first aid. The customer outright rejected it and made him re work and showcase his skills again on the masterpiece.

Just as he was about to recover from this assault there came the final Bofors Gun attack. The last bag which was kept with her was now thrown at him and came out three pieces of garment all done previously by him. It seemed these had some fitting issues. Hence, now even these had to be redone by him by end of the week. Only then he would be awarded the bravery award; his remuneration.

Getting this diktat he was low and down. Sulking, he was waiting for reinforcements; his co workers. Soon, not only the reinforcements came in but also first aid turned up; cup of hot tea. All of them discussed the next line of action over the hot tea. With the vapors fogging his spectacles, commander in chief enjoyed his tea. Wiping the fog off, he seemed to erase all the dejection and was ready with new valor and energy to finish the work.

Witnessing his patience and dedication, all my exhaustion was forgotten. He helped me vent my inner frustration. Just then my bus arrived. As I was about to get in, I saw another infiltrator carrying two bags of ammunition, entering the battlefield.

  1. As the saying goes – I cried for a pair of new shoes till I found a boy without feet. We feel that our problems and worries are the worst till we actually find out that there are others whose woes are far far worst but they still smile and laugh and conquer the same. That is the time you feel that you are really blessed. They make our worries and problems are far far less / small or insignificant.

Your story, which you say is a fusion of real and imaginary work is a wonderful example of how we can reduce our tensions and worries by looking and observing others. The learning that one can get from pure observing is some thing which big business schools cannot impart.

Excellent work, very good observation, good comparison of characters and very good presentation. Keep it up. Your blogs are becoming better and better each time you write. It’s a pleasure to read them. Looking forward for your next. God bless.
